Pilates for Scoliosis - Who Gets

Has anyone told you that you have Scoliosis and that there's "nothing" you can do about it?   You might want to question that...

The Physician told me that at age 10.  That I'd also be looking at some kind of arthritic condition in the spine around age 50.

"Doctor, can I stretch, do Yoga, or something else to fix it?"

"No, sorry."

"If I COULD fix it, would I be taller?"

He chuckles, pats me on the head, and exits.

("I don't believe you!"  At least that was in my head.)

Well... fast forward to age 40, and I was wishing that Physician could see the xray that Dr. Chip Abbadessa showed me, in December, 2009.  

"Do you mean to tell me you used to have Scoliosis?" he asked.  

That said:  Before the breakthrough, I started having chronic pain at age 19.  During stressful times, like exams, I downed Ibuprofen and and got massages to endure the spasms.  Over the years, I also experienced very one-sided running injuries. Right hip, knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot.  I attributed all of that to Scoliosis, but never gave up on the idea that something could be done.  I just wasn't sure what that was.

At age 27, I was sitting at my desk, looking out the window to the lovely ocean, wracked with pain.  I had developed a headache at age 13 which had never gone away.  And I decided that there must be more to life than billable hours and suits.  So, I put in my notice, and first found massage therapy.  Loved studying anatomy and massage techniques to reduce pain.

I discovered Pilates in my 30s and fell in love with it.  Worked with a reknowned Physiotherapist from Winnipeg, Canada in March 2008 for some foundational ideas to get started with my own Scoliosis. She was not Pilates at all.  As for the rest, she said, I had to "figure it out."  Because at the time STOTT PILATES® had no protocol for Scoliosis.  Eventually, they did come out with a protocol, and I've enjoyed supplementing my own exercises with theirs. 

I worked on myself every day. In December 2009, I met Dr. Abbadessa, took that xray, and saw that it was possible.  And yes -- I did get a little bit "taller."  Along the way, I had freed myself of the chronic pain that I endured from age 19 and gradually changed, through my (modified) Pilates practice.

Ever since then, I've developed a niche for Scoliosis, other spine issues, and injuries. I also branched out -- Besides modified Pilates, I incorporate Franklin Method®, Osteopathic Sciences, and hands-on bodywork (with my state massage license and NCBTMB Board certification).

One-on-one sessions are ALWAYS the better way to go, for maximizing your results.  Because you want to have my full attention, and I want yours.  In a private session, you will get customized exercises for your body, as well as homework.  How often you do your homework will affect the quality and speed of your results.

I cannot make guarantees about what sort of results you will get, in what time frame.  Everyone is unique, with differing amounts of time and attention they can give.  With different levels of Scoliosis.  With different mindsets, too.  What I can say, is that I can provide tools for change, and show you how to use them.
